Unfortunate Inhumations

As a grand tribute to Edward Gorey and a equally grand portfolio-builder, I’m creating my own version of his epic, “Gashlycrumb Tinies.” The name is derived from Pratchett’s works, wherein the Assassain’s guild’s euphamism for “kill” was “inhume.” Always liked it, wanted to use it. Now I have.

This is hardly a complete work, everything up here at this point still has significant modifications to be made – all need further environment, little bit more decoration, and likely a little colour, as well as the final text and bordering. However, they’re up.

The splashpage. Very similar to Mr. Gorey’s, except that I’ve given Death a more prominent position within the frame.

A is for Ayden, locked in a shed.

B is for Bartholomew, miserably fed.

C is for Clarice, ascended by rocket.

D is for Dominic, cooked at a socket.

E is for Edgar, who skipped off a cliff.

F is for Felicia, overturned in a skiff.

Pretty good. I love Death’s hat. And Dominic. I guess your medium is watercolor and felt tips?

Close, but not quite – so far all I’ve used is felt-tip pens, a fineliner, and a pencil. The pages are pre-stained that sepia colour, and I’m using these Staedtler Brush Pens, which achieve an effect similar to using watercolours, but without the risk of bleeding of flaring. The fineliner rocks the detail, the pens provide gradient, and the pencil is for layout. I erase all of that once the piece is done.

In the two or three frames after this, I need to use diluted calligraphic ink, but other than that, everything we’re liable to see has already shown up.

A reply. Honest, there are more coming. I have a few tiles still needing Touches, but… We’re close.
