Earth Hour Follow-Up

March 30, 2008

…To all the Earth Hour-ers who came down to hang out at Cafe KW, that didn’t count. Using someone else‘s power isn’t the same as not consuming power at all.

By comsuming power, you defeated the point of the excecise, such as it was.

Equally, to all the people who showed up at 5 past 9 looking for coffee, I’ll give you fair points for sticking to the timing, but we’re doing the same thing, and we close at 9. Once we hit that point, I just want to go home. It’s nice that it’s cold out, it’s nice that you just did Earth Hour. I just poured the last of our coffee down the sink, and the espresso machine has been off since we turned off the “Open” sign. Go home.

Anyway. For all that it’s pretty hollow event, the idea of undertaking Earth Hour isn’t to find a loophole to get around the inconvenience. It does count if it’s someone else’s power, don’t lie to yourselves.

The media in my lovely town informs me that Calgary did not participate in Earth Hour.
They proceed to then tell me how horrible this is, because Alberta is the epitome of horrible engergy waste in the form of oil products.

Your media has fallen victim to both Earth Hour’s “We’re making a difference, guys, honestly!” partyline and a typical Activist culture which decries anything short of raging wholehearted flag-waving slogan-chanting support as a plain sign that “they” are with the other team. I got a good dose of that at the party the other night when it came up that I’d worked (With the power on, holy shit!) during Earth Hour.
