I was afraid…

March 18, 2006

…Of the movie snob in Cinephile Video. Rhea & I chilled yesterday did tea, and rented Howl’s Moving Castle by Hayao Miyazaki for after dinner. He told us that we definately had to watch it in Japanese, with subtitles. We agreed, politely, and then went home, and promptly watched it dubbed. Dubbed is stupid when its live-action, but dubbing in cartoon is the same as in its native tongue, ’cause that’s dubbed too. They’re not making the right shapes with their mouths anyway, so it doesn’t matter.

Anyway, we watched the movie, it was awesome, better plot than Spirited Away, but not quite as graphically stunning. Spirited still gets my vote as the favourite. But Howl’s gets a close second.

It was a generally fun evening, and totally made the week.

Today, I took the video back, and applied for a job at The Green Room (an odd little restraunt, dunno what they do, I just saw that they were hiring), as well as running some other errands and getting my Tax slip from Himself at The Greek Place (oh, man… I miss that place).

While taking the video back, the same guy was there. But more so. Last night, he just seemed a little intense. In the light of day, he was revealed as a full-on Indie-Video-Store film geek, with complete movie pretention and all the junk that goes along with it. He, of course, remembered me from yesterday, and asked how we watched it. I was … stuck, for a moment. Deer-in-the-headlights style. I was actually afraid of his intensity, and didn’t want to have to admit to watching it dubbed. …I was saved by some old lady asking what the black tags on DVD’s were for, and the dodged the re-ask by buying myself a bag of Kettle Chips, which I’d been searching Main for anyway. But, come down to it, I woulda lied. Broken my self-promise further, making #6 this year, but I thankfully avoided it.

But I woulda – he scared me.

My Opinion: Movie nerds shouldn’t work in video stores. It’s bad for the cutsomers.

Innit just…? I have full envy of the illustrators, and Mr. Miyazaki, and everyone else involved – SO damned cool.
